Australia's Education System

I'm kinda lazy to blog actually..so i'll just paste the email I wrote to one of my poly lecturers regarding my school life here! ..it just sums it all! Only the science pple would really know what I'm talking about..

"Hey Dr Liew!

How have you been doing? Its going to be 3 weeks since I first touched down in Melbourne. School started on 26 Feb, and already, I've got assignments coming in!

We started practical sessions yesterday for Microbiology and, its been going fine! We're studying the microbe Streptococcus pyogenes and we're each given an isolate of it, taken from the Northern Territory of Australia. Practicals here are more interactive, in a sense that we each get to do our own experiment, following the guidelines given to us. I've got 60 students in my practical class, and we're all separated into groups of 10, each having our own "teacher" per bench. So, its been cool! I get to ask a lot more questions and do a lot more stuff my own. The next practical, we're going to do a lot of PCR on our isolate, glad I did it before! The practical rooms are really neat and well furnished as well! We've got automated taps and soap dispensers, cool stuff!

Aside from that, the lecturers here have been really nice and approachable. They don't make you feel scared to approach. One thing really different from Singapore is the way they teach. Its more application, like you said. Everything is about asking questions. The lecturers expect you to keep asking questions, and keep on thinking about the stuff they taught. Its like when you ask them something, they'll ask something back at you to make you analyse. They call it critical/analytical thinking! Pretty hard stuff for me to master. But I've been trying to get a hang of it.

Tutorial questions they give can NEVER be found anywhere on the web or textbooks or notes! Its all thinking questions, you have to infer from literature found in tons of journals they recommend, and with that, for your questions, you must put proper referencing. Its a whole new thing to me, but I guess, its more effective learning this way. I'm forced to think out of the box for the answer, instead of regurgitating (I'm VERY GOOD at that), so it forces me to apply what I learn. Its been pretty tough, but I'm sure once I get the hang of it, I'll be able to cope.

Oh well, enough said! Just thought I'd enlighten you on how I'm coping with the education system here! Wrote quite a lot, sorry for being so long-winded! But I can never stress how different the academic system is here! Last but not least, I think I'll enjoy it here.. =)

Love, Janice"

Missing everybody...

Somewhere out there

Somewhere out there
Beneath the pale moon light
Someone's thinking of me
And loving me tonight

Somewhere out there
Someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another
In that big somewhere out there

And even though
I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think
We might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind
Starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think
We might be sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there
If love can see us through
Then when we're together
Somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true...

I miss home..

I even have some aerial shots cause I took a helicopter to capture the whole sight! Enjoy pple!

Oh!..and we saw wild Koalas!..see if you can spot them!

Along Great Ocean Road....photos not in order!

Mum's Gone..Down I Go to Half Moon Bay...

My mum went back home today..I felt uneasy sending her off..it dawned on me suddenly that when i go back to the apartment..there'll be nobody there.....no one to talk to, no one to laugh with, no one to cook with...just me and the house...the echos of the apartment walls will be my companion and the only sound I'll hear...

The more I thk abt how lonely I am, the more i feel sad..so..I shall talk about something else..

SO!..Thankfully, after I send my mum at 1+pm..I met my friend at 4+ to go to the beach! He drove and we went to Half moon bay!..The water's crystal clear and SUPER cold!!...even though its summer..its cause the ocean water mainly comes from the Antartica, thats why its freezing!.. We were just soaking oursleves in the water when the waves started to come in!!..Damn fun just letting the waves push you around.. This girl beside me had her bikini come loose due to the force of the waves and so, she went on enjoying just covering her boobs! plus we saw a really old guy with a hot bod in a beach g-string!..he had a really cute womanly-liked bum..haha..nice...

After that, we went for dinner and ice-cream at 9pm!..Ice cream was good..I had mint and fererro roche! He had vanilla and lychee...pretty cool flavours too.. but i felt sick after that so here I am..trying to tide over my slight gastric. .ate dinner a tad too late..oh well..

Me in ME!bourne

The past few days have been really crazy and tiring, trying to settle all my admin stuff but thanks to my mum..ive got it all settled!..

Been exploring the streets near my apartment which are a good 15 minute walk from the city and a 5 minute walk from my university. Its been tiring cause public transport here is so expensive so we've resorted to walking everywhere, groceries in hand!

Weather here has also been crazy; 1min its terribly hot and the next, the winds are MEGA strong! It blew away my friend's specs off her face! Poor girl.

The apartment that im staying in is really small. Its got 2 bedrooms, 1 living room, 1 bathroom and a kitchen. The only thing its lacking is a laundry area which is at a common area and costs me AUD3 for the washing machine or the dryer...damn expensive!

Good news of the day: Janice has learnt to cook rice and soup!!.progress!

Anyway, last sunday, we went to St kilda's. St kilda's is like clarke quay and further down there's a beach. Clubs and pubs here start at 5pm and the girls at St kilda's are HOT!!..but standing beside them are like standing bside giants..makes me want to be taller even more. There was a music festival going on so the roads were packed full with people so mum and i decided to abandon our mission to the beach...
